The new sublime

Why data, not mountains, may be where we now feel awe — and what that asks of artists.

Romantic painters stood before mountains and storms to feel something larger than themselves. Today, the forces that shape our lives are often invisible: currents of air, money, attention, heat.

Data gives us a way to sense those forces, but a spreadsheet rarely moves anyone. The work of the studio is to return scale and feeling to numbers — to let a room brighten because the sun has stirred.

The sublime, in this sense, is not a view. It is a relationship: the moment you realise the light around you is responding to something real, and that you are part of it.

Co-creation with machines

Notes on authorship when the work keeps making itself after the artist leaves the room.

A generative work is finished only in the sense that a garden is finished. We plant rules, choose inputs, and then step back.

People often ask who the author is. The honest answer is: a system of collaborators — the code, the data, the place and the people who move through it.

What we design, finally, is a temperament. How quickly does the work react? How much does it remember? Those choices are where the artist lives.

Listening to non-human intelligence

What tides, birds and fungal networks taught us about designing patient systems.

Most digital design rewards speed. Nature rarely does. A tide takes six hours to turn; a forest takes a century to answer a question.

When we built Tide Algorithms, the hardest decision was to make it slow — to resist animating every wave and let the promenade change at the pace of the river.

Patience is not the absence of behaviour. It is behaviour at a scale that asks us to stay a little longer.

On attention

A short manifesto for public art in an age of infinite scroll.

Attention is the material we work with, more than light or code. A public work competes with every screen in every pocket.

We do not try to win by being louder. We try to be worth returning to — a work you notice has changed since yesterday.

Systems bloom when we pay attention. The reverse is also true: attention blooms when a system is worth paying it to.
